The Osterhorn group in the Salzkammergut mountains is a natural jewel and hiker's paradise in equal measure. The perfect starting point for many hikes on the region's network of 150 kilometres of hiking trails is the idyllic village of Hintersee. Hintersee lies at the very end of a sparsely populated valley that stretches from Faistenau in a southerly direction. The lake of the same name also attracts recreation-seekers for swimming and hiking.

Hintersee is one of the smallest communities in Salzburger Land, located in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut and a popular destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts and nature lovers all year round. The village is picturesquely framed by the peaks of the Osterhorn group such as Gennerhorn, Regenspitz and Gruberhorn and offers the best conditions for extended hikes. Numerous alpine pastures offer themselves as destinations from spring to autumn, especially for families with a passion for hiking.
The hiking park is located in the heart of the Osterhorn group.
Two wonderful hikes start from the hikers' car park in Lämmerbach (parking ticket 8 €), which can also be reached with bus lines 155 or 157 at hourly intervals from Salzburg. The Gruberalm can be reached in a short and easy hike, while the tour to the Genneralm, where several catered alpine pastures await hungry guests, is somewhat longer. Both hikes are technically easy and can also be mastered by children. On the Joseph Mohr Trail you can also get to know the beautiful village better.
Gennerhorn and Regenspitz - On steep peaks around Hintersee
The touring area around Hintersee is a real paradise for summit collectors. If you are in good shape, you can combine several summits into long tours and usually you will also pass by one or two alpine huts. The tour to the Regenspitz, which starts at the car park at Satzstein, is undoubtedly one of the great classics around Hintersee and can be combined perfectly with a stop at the mountain pasture and the ascent of the Bergköpfl.
.The striking Gennerhorn with its steep northern flanks is not only beautiful to look at but also a great, moderately difficult destination with a magnificent panoramic view from the summit. The panorama extends to the Schafberg, the Tennengebirge and as far as the Berchtesgaden Alps.
Tip for those with a strong constitution: the 3-summit tour
The 3-summit tour über Gennerhorn, Gruberhorn and Regenspitz is certainly one of the most beautiful but also most difficult hikes in the northern Salzburg Aloes. After starting at the hikers' car park in Lämmerbach, you first climb the Gennerhorn. This is followed by the Gruberhorn from where a narrow, exposed path leads to the Regenspitz. Surefootedness is absolutely necessary for this difficult hiking trail. The descent over the beautiful ridge from the Regenspitz ends directly at the Feichtensteinalm, where a cold drink awaits and you have another great view of the completed route.

Can you swim in Hintersee?
The Hintersee is located on the way from Faistenau to the village of Hintersee and is a popular place to hike around but also to swim. The crystal-clear mountain lake is fed by melt water from the surrounding mountains and also promises cooling in summer. A five-kilometre-long hiking trail runs around the lake, which is also suitable for children's bikes and wheelchairs. Afterwards, you can enjoy a drink at the small lakeside buffet and simply relax.
On hot summer days there is often a lot going on at Hintersee. There is a small car park, but it is better to come by bus. The bus runs every hour from the city of Salzburg to Hintersee.
Long-distance hiking through the Salzkammergut on the BergeSeen Trail
The beauty of the Salzkammergut and the Alps can be discovered quite well on day tours around Hintersee. For those who like to hike longer and also want to explore other corners of the Salzkammergut, we recommend the BergeSeen Trail. On a total of 23 stages, this trail leads past the most beautiful places in the Salzkammergut. Of course, it is also worthwhile to walk individual stages of the trail. Stages 8 to 10 are ideal for exploring the mountains around Hintersee and the beautiful alpine pastures of the Postalm.
