Fortress Milching and Fortress By The Water
For many centuries, the noble family of Schutzbar, called Milching, lived in Treis an der Lumda. The residence of the Milching family on the south bank of the Lumda was until the 16th century the rectangular late Gothic stone residential tower and an adjoining dwelling house built in 1679. Part of the extensive noble family then built another castle building on the north bank, the so-called Burg am Wasser. It is an old architectural monument with the "Ellhaus" (noble house), which is still inhabited. Directly opposite the moated castle, separated only by the Lumda River, still stands the remnant of the old castle wall with a thieves' tower. Both monuments are privately owned.
Today, only remains of the wall and the prison tower are preserved. The area on the north bank with buildings reverted to the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, who had an impressive official building erected there around 1800. All buildings are now privately owned and inhabited. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
