Staufenberg Castle consists of two castle buildings. The older upper castle, which only exists as a ruin, and the lower castle, which was probably built in 1517 and is now used as a hotel and restaurant.

Staufenberg Castle is enthroned in a striking location at the confluence of the Lahn and Lumda rivers. There are two castle buildings: the older upper castle, which only exists as a ruin, and the younger, restored lower castle.

Upper Castle

The upper castle is located on the top of a basalt cone overgrown with trees, bushes and flowers. The castle was first mentioned in writing around 1233. Today, only the remains of the walls of the palace, the main building of the castle, from the 13th century, as well as the adjacent ruins of the corner tower with the still existing and accessible spiral staircase, have been preserved. There are also parts of the ring wall, some cellars and a gate from the 15th century. The upper castle was largely destroyed during the so-called "Hessian War" (1646 - 1648). The castle was used as a quarry until 1843, after which it was secured and is still used today as a place for excursions, a backdrop for festivals and theater performances.

Lower Castle

The lower castle is located directly below the upper castle, it was built in 1517 as a residential building. Towards the end of the 17th century, the castle came into the possession of Baron von Grass. From then on, the owners changed and the building fell into ruin. In the middle of the 19th century, the Princes of Hesse bought the estate and had it rebuilt by the architect Hugo von Ritgen. The property came into the possession of the People's State of Hesse in 1925. Today, the walls of the lower castle house a hotel and restaurant Burg Staufenberg, known far beyond the borders of Hesse. Today, this property is once again privately owned.
