It's high time for an extended winter holiday? You want lots of fun in the snow, great ski tours and summit experiences in a landscape that inspires? If you think that your journey has to lead you straight to the Alps, you are very much mistaken. The German low mountain ranges also have a lot to offer winter sports enthusiasts.
The densely forested Ore Mountains stretch for about 150 kilometres along the German-Czech border. In winter, the region in Saxony and Böhmen shows its most beautiful side: on ski tours in the Ore Mountains you climb small but fine mountain peaks. Once at the top, let your gaze wander over endless forests that look as if someone has sprinkled them with icing sugar.
But where can you find the best ski tours in the Ore Mountains? On the one hand, of course, where the wildly romantic low mountain range shows its highest elevations: The highest peak on the German side is the Fichtelberg (1,215 m) near Oberwiesenthal. On the Czech side, the 1,244-metre Keilberg (Czech: Klínovec) is the highest peak in the Ore Mountains. Both peaks are in the immediate vicinity and together form the InterSki Region Fichtelberg - Klínovec - which can also be wonderfully discovered on a ski tour.
It is worthwhile exploring the region.
Another worthwhile destination for ski tourers is Annaberg-Buchholz, located north of Oberwiesenthal on the Sehma River. Johanngeorgenstadt in the western Ore Mountains also offers several ski touring routes and is known as a stage stop for the Stoneman Miriquidi Snow.
Ski tours in the Fichtelberg - Klínovec ski area
If you want to climb the Fichtelberg, the best place to strap on your skis is at the Himmelsleiter valley station. Here you set off on a ski tour suitable for beginners, which makes ski mountaineering twice as much fun: the tour takes you up to the summit twice, so that you can also enjoy the descent twice - via two different pistes. On the almost eight-kilometre-long route, you can expect great viewpoints and opportunities to stop for refreshments, such as the Fichtelberghaus or the Baude Waldeck.
Tipp.
Tip: Don't miss out on a ride on the Fichtelberg suspension railway. Germany's oldest aerial cableway was built in 1924. In the cabin high above the ground, you can climb a good 300 metres in just a few minutes and enjoy the fantastic view of the spa town of Oberwiesenthal and the wintry Erzgebirge mountains.
Ski tours with the best view: Annaberg-Buchholz
You will have a wonderful view of the Fichtelberg and Keilberg on your ski tours in Annaberg-Buchholz. Here you will also find tours that are perfect for beginners. For example, the 13-kilometre ski tour from Annaberg über Cunersdorf to Kühberg offers a beautiful view of the two highest elevations of the Erzgebirge. The route is very flat, so that this is one of the more leisurely ski touring routes.
When the snow conditions are good, the winter hiking trail around the Pöhlberg (831 m ü. M.) is also ideally suited for an entertaining ski tour. There are less than 100 metres to climb on the five-kilometre tour. If you like, you can make a detour to the summit and stop off at the mountain hotel there.
Are the Ore Mountains safe from snow?
The Ore Mountains, along with the Bavarian Forest, are considered to be particularly snow-sure low mountain ranges in Germany. The best conditions for ski touring are from the end of January to the beginning of March. Nevertheless, you should always get the latest information about the snow conditions so that your ski tours in the Ore Mountains are a complete success.
In addition to great tours on skis or snowshoes, the Ore Mountains have other exciting winter sports activities to offer. For example, you can let off steam with your skis or snowboard in freeriding or on well-prepared slopes. Another winter highlight of the region is the Skimagistrale: The Skimagistrale, together with the Kammloipe and Osterzgebirgsloipe, forms an approx. 200 km long long long-distance ski trail that starts in Schöneck in the Vogtland and ends in Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge.
Die Skimagistrale verbindet Marienbergs Ortsteile Satzung, Reitzenhain, Kühnhaide und Rübenau, die alle unmittelbar an der Grenze zur ...
