I choose Hachenburg as my starting point and destination, drive north from the train station and come across the Konrad Adenauer memorial plaque in Nistertal. The later Federal Chancellor once hid here from the Gestapo. A little to the west is the Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt with its beautiful Gothic basilica. A little further I visit the Bach nature trail and the village museum of Limbach. When I arrive in Stein-Wingert, I consider trying one of the many delicacies in the old mill. Again and again I am inspired by the beautiful nature and the wide views. Passing the Dreifelder Weiher, the route now leads to the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Dreifelden, the oldest stone church in the Westerwald. The Wied, the longest river in the Westerwald, rises under a beech tree in Linden. Passing the Alpenroder Hütte and the lookout tower on the Gräbersberg, I drive past the Böhmsfund kaolin mine, an idyllic lake with a picnic table on the east bank to take a break. Finally, the landscape museum, the castle garden and the beautiful old market with its red-brown half-timbered facades, numerous shops, inns and cafés await me in Hachenburg for sightseeing.

Author’s recommendation

In the Cistercian abbey Marienstatt it is worth taking a little break in the beer garden and trying the abbey brewery's own beer.

Destination

Hachenburg, train station

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour is well suited for sports and pedelec riders. The start at the train station leads down into the valley of the Nister and on to Streithausen and Luckenbach. There follows an ascent to Limbach and to a high platform with a wonderful view. Now it's downhill again to the Nistertal, later uphill again towards Giesenhausen. When the weather is good, I can see as far as the Siebengebirge from up there. I reach the Wiedtal near Ingelbach and cycle upstream through beautiful forests, meadows and fields. It continues through the beautiful Wahlroder forest. Finally, I come across the Upper Wiedtal and find myself in the middle of one of the most extensive nature reserves in the Westerwald. I drive through Steinebach and Schmidthahn to the Dreifelder Weiher, the largest in the Westerwald lake district. Then I pass Dreifelden and Linden, a little later I climb the Gräbersberg. The path then leads down to Alpenrod and finally through the Hachenburger Stadtwald back to the Alter Markt.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks, not only the back offers space on a bike tour - the weight of the equipment should be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Wind, rain or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike - a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have a change of clothes on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important pieces of equipment, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it's easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device are used for orientation. You should always have a small emergency kit with you.
