This is exactly how one imagines the life of Ronja the Robber's Daughter: A castle high up on a rock above the valley, surrounded by deep, dark forest and nothing but the silence of nature. However, the castle was not built as a robbery castle at all, but for the so-called "Gueträter", a noble family that was entrusted with guarding the salt at Gutratsberg at the beginning of the 13th century.

Safety information

The hike to the ruins of Gutrat Castle is generally easy to walk and only in the last part a little more difficult, because the ruin is located on a rock. However, steel ropes and a metal grid allow a problem-free ascent. For people with a fear of heights, however, it could still be a challenge!

Please always keep in mind that on the hikes described here you are in the mountains, in free nature and partly in alpine territory.

Turn-by-turn directions

We start our tour at the Hotel Auwirt and cross the Salzburgerstraße. On the other side of the road we hike straight ahead on the Salzquellenweg (trail no. 459a) into a kind of hollow way. Right at the beginning, the path goes steeply uphill between the houses. We walk through a larger farmstead and follow the Salzquellenweg to its end. From here a wide gravel road begins which leads us in a northwesterly direction up to the edge of the forest. At the edge of the forest you will find the small Hubertus chapel, which invites you to take a short break with its beautiful view and benches and can be reached via a short path. Behind the chapel, we hike straight ahead for about 30 minutes, following the signs to the Gutrat ruin and the yellow spray markings of the SalzAlpenTour. The path climbs steadily slightly until it divides some time later at a crossroads. While it would continue straight on to Bad Leonhard, we take the narrow path on the right and go downhill over wooden footbridges and wooden stairs. From here you can already see the Gutrat ruins perched on a rock. We return along the same path.
