This hiking route offers impressive views of mountain Watzmann and lake Königssee. Hiking poles and spikes/crampons are highly recommended in icy/snowy conditions. Difficulty ranges from easy/medium-easy in summer months to rather challenging in winter in case of a lot of snow.

Duration: ~6 hours without snow, longer with snow. For our conditions (on snow) ~7-8 hours.

Author’s recommendation

If Königssee is frozen (no boats, so no tourists at St. Bartholomä) and there is no wind, Archenkanzel offers a great silence. Just sit at listen the sounds of eventual rockfalls and wingtips of birds crossing the air.

Safety information

WARNING: avalanche danger! At the last part there is roughly 1 km of rather steep slope on the right side (angle > 30 degrees, check the map). There were results of a lot of small avalanches, which can easily swipe people from the road or cause traumas due to stones/snow/ice pieces. Check the current conditions, avalanche warnings at lawinenwarndienst-bayern.de, try to cross this part as soon as possible. In bad conditions follow maintained road down to Wimbachbrücke and return through the valley.

No mobile network in some parts of the park.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hiking trail starts from parking place near Hammerstiel. Follow road to East and roughly in 200-300 m turn right onto the forest road. Follow it for the next ~2.2 km. At the end of the road there is Grünsteinhütte (closed in winter).  From there follow the sings towards the summit of Grünstein (~400 m one way). It offers impressive view on Watzmann mountain (SW) or Berchtesgaden/Königssee (E).

From the summit follow the same path back to the Grünsteinhütte (closed in winter) and from there go by trail to Kührointalm. First  2 km go throught the forest path, which has rather steep acent at the end. After that you will find a gravel road to Kührointalm (maintained in winter).  In ~1.3 km you will reach Kührointalm (closed in winter). From there follow designated path to Archenkanzel.

On the way back follow the same path to Kührointalm, and then follow a road to Schapbachalm. Roughly in 800 meters after Schapbachalm turn right to the forest road. Just follow it until you reach the starting point of the tour.
