Salzburger Land

The province of Salzburg can be divided into five regions: The Flachgau is covered by the Salzburg foothills of the Alps and, to a lesser extent, by the Osterhorngruppe, which belongs to the Northern Limestone Alps. The Tennengau, to the south of the Flachgau, includes the area around the city of Hallein as well as parts of the Salzach Valley and the Lammertal. The three southern districts of Pinzgau, Pongau and Lungau include in parts the mountainous region of Hohen Tauern.

The mountainous landscape of Salzburg offers hikers almost unlimited opportunities to explore the mountain world of the region. There are flat, easy routes as well as difficult routes that can be really challenging. Cyclists also find an extensive network of paths connecting the Salzburg region. Mountain bikers enjoy the steep climbs, the rapid descents and the beautiful single trails in the mountains. In winter, great routes tempt you to discover the white snow-covered nature on snowshoes, skis, or sleighs.

The state capital Salzburg is definitely worth a visit. The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart offers a beautiful old town, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Hohensalzburg Fortress towers above the city. The Salzburg Festival, also world-famous, is considered the most important festival of classical music and performing arts in the world. Since 1920 they have been held every summer in Salzburg. Famous sights of the city are, for example, the Salzburg Cathedral, Mirabell Palace with its beautiful gardens, Hellbrunn Palace and the Franciscan Church. Numerous museums in Salzburg invite you to dive into the past or other worlds.

Outside the city, you can also discover many castles and palaces in the region. Hohenwerfen Castle, for example, dates back to the Middle Ages and towers above the town of Werfen in the Salzach Valley.
