Bottrop

The city in the north of the Ruhr region is inextricably linked with mining and industry. The last German coal mine was in operation here until 2018. The Haniel slag heap, a ring-shaped mountain range in the center of which is an amphitheater for cultural events, is worth seeing. The Tetraeder rises on the Beckstraße slagheap: the pyramid-shaped viewing platform has been the city's landmark since 1995. Sports enthusiasts get their money's worth at the Alpincenter Bottrop, where the world's longest indoor ski slope is located. Or they can visit the Hohe Mark Nature Park, Kirchheller Heide or Köllnischer Wald, which adjoin the city area to the north.
