Viewpoints in Koblenz

At Forum Confluentes - in an ultra-modern, architecturally outstanding building - art, culture and education have found a new home. The renowned office of the German-Dutch star architects Bentheim-Crouwel designed the Forum Confluentes, which opened in 2013, as an architectural masterpiece.

In the middle of the city forest is the 382-metre-high Kühkopf with it's striking television and radio tower, the third-highest structure in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The Rittersturz is a well-known vantage point for hikers in the Koblenz city forest, not far from the Königsbach and the main railway station. On 8 July 1948, the ministers and state presidents of the West German states met officially for two days under the leadership of Minister President Dr. Peter Altmeier to take an official position on the decision of the Western Allies to form a German state out of the three occupation zones of the USA, Great Britain and France.

After the Second War of Unification, also called the German War, the officers of the VIII. Army Corps erected a monument to the fallen in 1869.

Koblenz, near “Deutsches Eck”, with view of Ehrenbreitstein FortressWhen Turner stays at Koblenz from 21st to 23rd August 1817 he is so fascinated by Ehrenbreitstein Fortress that he makes several sketches of it from various different viewpoints. On subsequent journeys (between 1839 and 1844) he returns to the city at “Deutsches Eck”, never tiring of the subject of the lofty fortress. In this work he gazes across the river from the left bank (in Koblenz) to the opposite bank of the Rhine. The fortress can be faintly made out in the contour of the hillside, the rocks and fortress appearing to form a single entity. Today Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is owned by the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate and is open to the public.

On 23rd August 1817 Turner leaves Koblenz and walks upstream along the left bank of the Rhine. Shortly before reaching Stolzenfels Castle he stops to make the sketch for this watercolour. The painting shows the mouth of the river which lies ahead of him (in the middle of the picture), framed by rocky scenery on both sides of the river. On the right of the picture the dark silhouette of Stolzenfels Castle rises against the hillside. It is notable that Turner places the mouth of the River Lahn on the wrong side of the Rhine. Whether this was for compositional reasons, or whether it was a mistake on Turner’s part remains obscure. Only a few hundred metres further on Turner takes the ferry across to Lahnstein. Today Stolzenfels Castle is owned by the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate and is open to the public.

For the Federal Horticultural Show 2011, the plateau in front of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was fundamentally redesigned and planted. A viewing platform in the shape of a huge triangle was built by Landesforsten Rheinland-Pfalz, which displayed an exhibition on the theme of "Forests in Transition" in the walkways.

Where Father Rhine meets Mother Moselle

The Löwentor (Lion Gate) is the impressive, crenellated gate of the disbanded Prussian fortress of Kaiser Alexander. The griffins on either side of the portal, cast in the Sayner Hütte, and the large inscription give a good impression of the military and urban impression of the complex.
